Enabling integrated care: rethinking systems in whānau and community

Tuesday, 25 November | 4:20pm to 4:50pm

Facilitator: Alex Kemp

In Aotearoa, integrated care has long been an aspiration—yet fragmentation between primary, community, aged care, and hospital services continues to shape daily reality. As digital health transformation accelerates, how might governance and system design evolve to bridge these divides and keep people and whānau at the centre?

This future-focused panel brings together leaders with the perspective of having grappled with the deep fragmentation that defines health and social care in New Zealand. They will share frank insights into the opportunities and tensions of shifting power, redesigning governance, and enabling care that starts in—and stays connected to—the community.

We’ll explore questions such as:

  • Are governance frameworks built around services able to serve communities, or do they need reimagining?
  • Is digital transformation closing gaps or creating new ones in care delivery?
  • What might it look like when integration is led from communities and iwi, rather than directed from the centre?
  • How do funding, workforce, and regulation enable—or constrain—genuine integration?
  • What international approaches could challenge us to think differently in Aotearoa?

This will be a future-focused, challenging conversation designed to surface hard questions, unsettle comfortable assumptions, and spark bold new thinking about what integrated, community-centred, digitally-enabled care could look like

Where does AI fit in the future of healthcare in Aotearoa NZ?

Wednesday, 26 November | 1:30pm to 2:00pm

Facilitator: Rebecca McBeth

Artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing, but what role will it play in shaping the future of healthcare in New Zealand?

This panel will tackle some of the biggest questions: will AI primarily support and augment clinicians, or could it replace certain roles altogether? Should AI be deeply embedded across the health system, or reserved for specific decision points?

How can we prepare our health workforce for this evolving landscape, and what might it mean if personal AI health assistants empower patients to take greater control of their care?

Hear from the experts as they explore the opportunities and challenges of integrating AI into the future of healthcare in Aotearoa NZ.

Soapbox

Wednesday, 26 November | 2:20pm to 2:50pm

Facilitator: Scott Arrol

The soapbox speaker session was a great hit at Digital Health Week 2024 so we’re bringing it back for 2025 in Christchurch!

Have you got something you want to get off your chest or some pearls of wisdom to pass on – serious or light-hearted?  Then here’s your opportunity to participate in this informal, open-mic style session for short, spoken contributions.  We provide a safe environment (what happens in the soapbox, stays in the soapbox!), there’s no Q&A from the audience although some good-natured heckling is allowed (in both directions).

You can pre-book a slot to make sure you get on the soapbox or anyone at the conference can turn up at the time and have a turn if slots are available. Slots are allocated on a first in, first served basis. The session is facilitated by Scott Arrol so there’s bound to be some fun and possibly a bit of chaos.

Contact Scott now to book a slot on ceo@hinz.org.nz or 021-414681 to discuss.
